Creating a concept

So, I started my final major project by having an idea of what to do, which was very difficult as I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I thought about it the whole summer but didn’t come up with anything. I started by doing some research about cool final major projects in the hope that I could take some inspiration from them. So I ended up finding this ideas: Album or EP Production, Sound Design for Film or Video Games, Interactive Music Installation or Multimedia Project, Music Production Educational Content, Remix Album or Production Portfolio, Experimental or Avant-Garde Music Project, Live Music Production or DJ Set, Studio Recording and Production of a Band or Artist. The album was a basic choice but it had to be something with a concept behind so it couldn’t be just a normal album. So after all these ideas, I developed my own thoughts about an album, but different from an everyday album. That’s when I came up with the idea of creating an album of remixes, but of course, not just some simple remixes. It’s something you don’t see very often these days; I remember listening to a popular song by Bob Sinclar that was a remix of an old Italian song from the 1980s. Additionally, the song “Pedro,” which has gained even more popularity in recent months, is by the same Italian singer, Raffaella Carrà, but has been remixed by Jaxomy, a DJ from Berlin. That’s how I got my idea. For instance, I would like to select between six and eight songs from Italian pop culture that span the 1970s to the 1990s and remix them so they resonate today. I’ve also had a meeting with my tutor, Matt, and it was the first time I had met him, as he hadn’t been teaching on my course in previous years. We discussed the project I was intending to undertake, and he provided me with plenty of useful advice and suggestions. I initially considered four tracks, but he advised that it would be better to create six to eight, as they are simple remixes, not entire compositions. He advised me to develop a research angle for this project that would highlight what people might learn from listening to it—something they could easily remember. I believe Matt has been incredibly helpful, as he not only suggested my work, but also motivated me to excel further. At times, I tend to do the bare minimum because I appreciate simplicity and straightforward things. However, I’ve learned that it can also be beneficial to push ourselves out of our comfort zone.
