Online Journal Week 7 13/11

Initial Development and Experimentation

During this week we met in class to discus about planning our recording sessions in the studio. We discussed in pairs with our colleagues, I was with Vivi. She told me about her project and i have to say she was really well organised with all the equipment and various different studio sessions that she had planned for her album. After I told her about mine and she gave me a good advice about recording some synthesisers to add as a sub-melody in my remixes. Also the synthesisers in the university studios have great choice of sounds and clean and catchy sounds. So, I would like to thank her again here even if i did it in person.

I don’t really need to record anything unless the synthesisers or vocals to add to the remixes. In which case, i would need to bring the stems to the studio on my laptop, decide if, which instrument or vocal to record, chose the microphone i would like for it, and also the placement. For the vocals i would chose either a Rode NT1 or a Shure SM7B, while for the instruments i would chose the Shure SM57 or an Audio Technica AT2020 ; but it mostly depends on which instrument in that case i would need to enquiry about the instrument i intend to record. Probably synths to add in the remixes, i plan to record them straight to the desk in the university studios. Apart from that I could use the studio just for the mixing and mastering part although I could do it at home and then check it and have some feedback and checking in the studios.

I also started working on the project with the first remix, starting from getting the stems for the first song that is ‘Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu’ by Domenico Mudugno. As i wanted the song in its best quality possible i searched how to get it legally and the easiest way i found was to download it by paying from Itunes in the Apple Music Store it costed only 0.79£ so it’s not a big deal. In addition to that we also got a fund from the university, for this project of 100£ that we can spend how we want inherent to the course, so even better. After that i would need to get the stems of the songs, basically every part such as the vocals, drums, bass and melody. For this task i used the software called Splitter AI which was really easy to use and gave me all the stems i needed. After this i put the stems in a Logic Pro sessions and i started experimenting with them.
